Heard about that Baroda university case, haven’t you?
Well! I have nothing much to say but about all that happened:
*it’s a shame to that university (came to know that it is nationally recognized for fine arts and blah blah!
*it’s a shame to Narendra Modi and his baseless hindutva…
*it’s a shame to that VC (fellow called Manoj Soni) who was made the VC at a mere age of 40( not that I’m saying you cannot have a young VC), by Modi-the great, just because he’d authored some bloody book: Third Space on the Gujarat carnage of 2002 with a staunch hindutva tilt.
*a shame to that unscrupulous group of VHP activists (that MOB to be precise!!!!) who claiming to be the moral brigade of a free n thinkin’ India vandalized the premises of an educational institution.
*a shame to the media which cashes on such incidents.

For god’s sake, can we leave the artist alone, and let him express himself. Who’s asking you to agree with him? At least, let him have his say…

A distinction must be made between artistic expression & religious icons. A work of art is never meant to be worshiped by the laymen. It is a way by which the artist expresses himself & his way of looking at the world. It is in this way that the sculptures of Khajuraho & Konark must be looked upon. But sycophants don't understand this. I am appalled by the hypocrites who can worship a naked goddess but cannot bear to see her portrayal in the same manner.

hypocrisy and politics exploiting the ignorance of a society about living life with a broader philosophy irritates me to hell :(

Hinduism as its basic tenet identifies three purusharthas (aims in life) of a man - dharma (duty towards self, better known as arete in Greek), artha (wealth) & kama (healthy connubial life). Sometimes a fourth pillar is added in form of Moksha (liberation fron the cycle of birth). Indian Architecture believes in the combination of the third & fourth purusharthas. Hence the msg behing the nude sculptures is that moksha (represented as the gods in the interior of the temple) is attainable even if we are indulged in kama, provided the kama is meant for yoga (the birth of offspring) rather than for bhoga (sensual pleasures). Hence, idea behind the sculpture is spiritual not sensual. Hope that explains it.

spirituality says sensuality is wrong?is it just for da purpose of continuation of the human race that that we are here?
and btw, thanx for da xplanation, i wud not end up as confused as earlier, every time i visit a temple :)

Well if u ask me, I m an atheist. Hence, all this rhetoric about spirituality is pure crap for me.
Even then, to understand & judge the art of a culture we will have think like the people of the culture bcoz otherwise we will be unable to understand the spirit behind the creation of a work of art. Perhaps thats the reason why the Occident scholars usually tend to disparage Oriental art.
Anyways, I believe that art is also a form of expression for our sensual desires & to believe that the people who designed the sculptures at Khajuraho & Konark were driven by their spiritual quest would be too extreme. After all, they were also humans like us. And the richness of details & the vigor in those sculptures definitely represents a celebration of life in this very world, not in some hypothetical transcendental heaven.

what "x" finds artistic, "y" will find vulgar, and we are bound to have differences...and there are people who l make a profitable political mileage out of it...anyways :D thanx for all da funadae :P keep coming back
